Two worldviews collided on February 4, 2014 at the Creation Museum, located in Petersburg, Kentucky. On one side was the evolutionary model - change over time through long ages - presented by Bill Nye. In direct opposition to this, Ken Ham proposed the model of biblical creation within the context of a young earth/universe in a time-frame of 6,000 years. The debate asked the question: “Is creation a viable model in origins in today's modern scientific era?” Attracting more than seven million internet viewers, the debate garnered a good deal of attention that night as it exemplified the long-standing conflict between these two very different worldviews. Intellectuals on both sides have debated for years on the origin of life. One worldview is based on a belief in secular naturalism, while the other is based on the Word of God. This debate has reignited the classic war against God, with the enemy waving the flag of atheistic materialism in the place of the true originator of the material universe. A month later, the press is still reporting on this event.
Bill Nye the Science Guy is famous for his fast-moving and engaging antics that made science education exciting for young and old. It became a one-of-a-kind hit with his creative approach that made science easy to understand. The most important ingredient was that he made it fun. In the nineties, it was recognized as one of the most viewed educational programs winning 18 Emmy's in just five years. Nye is a Cornell graduate in mechanical engineering who worked at Boeing for a short time. He not only had a passion for engineering and science, he also had a talent for making people laugh. Nye merged his talents by sharing his enthusiasm for science in the creative educational T.V. program “Bill Nye the Science Guy” that became one of the most popular documentaries used by science educators today.
The road to this debate was paved on January 22, 2014 when the Huffington Post posted a video on Facebook in which Bill Nye was asked the following question, “Do you believe in God?” Bill Nye quickly declared himself to be an agnostic and commented, “You can't be sure that there is a God.” He went on to say, “That there is plan for everybody and this deity has it all worked out and is directing things is an extraordinary claim that I find troublesome for me.” His belief system cannot welcome a deity controlling his life, because his belief system is based entirely on naturalism. Unlike Nye’s worldview where man arrogantly sees himself as the center of his world, true Christianity looks to the Messiah, God’s Son. Biblical faith is based upon the invisible Creator who makes Himself known through special revelation of His Word, the living Word of God, Jesus Christ, and through the general revelation of His Creation, “so that they are without excuse,” (Romans 1:20).
Ken Ham is one of the most passionate creationists in the United States as well as a best-selling Christian author. He has made a profound impact in spreading the Creation message with his Answers in Genesis (AiG) ministry and Creation Museum. He has diligently presented a biblical model of creation that adheres to six 24-hour days within a six thousand year time-frame. Here is where Ken Ham is on solid ground. Ken noted that God has clearly demonstrated this to all men by using His creation, through which we are able to see His glory and power. All of this draws us to His saving grace. This is confirmed in the book of Revelation chapter 4, verse 11, “You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, And by Your will they exist and were created.”
A useful and working definition of science is based on the accumulation of systemized knowledge. Merriam Webster dictionary adds, through “experiments and observation.” This operational definition demonstrates that science is a hands-on undertaking, collecting observable data and evaluating it so that accurate predictions can be made. During the debate, Ken Ham made that point clear by demonstrating that this is what needs to be emphasized in our schools. The most accurate definition of science is based on what God has commanded us to do. We are to discipline ourselves to study all of God's creation; thereby we can discover His true glory, experience His blessings in what we discover, and use this knowledge appropriately. Engaging ourselves in the study of our Master’s handiwork is what makes science exciting.
Because of man's weakness and susceptibility to error, science is also a process with a built-in system of self-correction. Proposals and results are published for peer review so that others can evaluate and make the necessary corrections to adopt a better model. Many evolutionists have to agree today that you cannot see evolution taking place in the present. They claim it happens too slowly. Because there were no witnesses to that event other than the Creator, man can only make use of conjecture when investigating the origin of life and the physical universe. He has recorded what took place in His Word. If we were to consider all the physical and biological processes taking place here on earth at this very moment, it would be truly overwhelming. As we observe the field of science massively diversify into sectors and then into divisions and subdivisions, we exponentially accumulate massive amounts of data. This knowledge accumulation is truly impressive, but those who are on the front lines of research are continually met with the subtle revelation of how much we do not know. It is this kind of ignorance that is humbling, because it demonstrates that man is a finite creature who has to submit to infinite intelligence in the form of a Creator God. The only source of reality and truth is found in God’s Word, particularly when dealing with history and the origins of man, life, and the physical world. Creationists follow this essential principle that the Bible is the key to the past. There is a tremendous amount of evidence, represented by archeological artifacts and paleontological fossils, that both confirms biblical history and speaks loudly of a young earth and universe.
The Lie of Evolution
Ken Ham gave an effective presentation of the Creationist’s position by demonstrating that evolution was exclusively based on postulations, assumptions, and presuppositions entirely inferred from data from the past. Evolution’s simple definition is change (molecules-to-men) over time (billions and billions of years). This type of definition for evolution has never been observed on planet earth. Yes, there are changes within the kind(s) that can be illustrated by the variety of dogs that are seen today. The largest registry of dog breeds comes from the internationally-accepted World Canine Organization (WCO). At this time, the WCO recognizes 339 breeds of dogs. Every one of them - from the chihuahua to the great dane and everything in between - are representatives of the original dog kind.
Evolution is based on the preconceived idea that the earth and universe is old. If evolution is true, the fossil record should give an accurate picture of evolution. The fossils should give us evidence of the evolutionary process, the gradual change of one kind of creature into another. We should see the transitions in the fossil record, but they are nowhere to be found. What do we find as we dig up the past? Let us begin with what we do not find. We do not find evidence of these upward changes, so evolutionists must have a blind faith that there is a connection to their theory in the fossil record. In most cases, these fossils that are supposedly connectors or transitions are also missing, and those alleged transitions are few and easily disputed. Most variations seem to be of the same kind as we have seen in the variety of breeds represented in the dog kind. If we observe what is actually available in the fossil record, one could conclude that the data easily supports a catastrophic worldwide flood as described in Genesis.
An astounding 95% of the total number of fossils on record are shallow marine invertebrates, also known as shellfish. Such findings certainly point to the ocean waters covering the land. There are numerous fossil beds in the western U.S. where swift mass burials of millions of marine organisms have taken place, one in particular being the Green River Formation. In this fossil bed, fish are buried while eating other fish. This could only have come from a catastrophic worldwide flood. Another example supporting the Genesis flood is the rock layers found on the surface of the earth. Seventy-percent of these rocks are sedimentary, which means they are formed when enormous amounts of sediments mix with large masses of water and eventually harden all over the surface of the earth. The results of a worldwide flood can be seen in numerous places around the world. As we check the rocks and fossils, we see rapid change over a very short period of time. Why should evolution be taught as a fact in our schools and used as the standard for preparing the next generation?
Bill Nye: The Secular Evangelist
Bill Nye has made it known that, in his words, “people who deny evolution are hurting children” in the YouTube clip entitled, “Creationism is Not Appropriate for Children,” produced by Big Think video published August 23, 2012. The producers attempted to make a case that believing in evolution is important for the next generation. Nye states, “Your world becomes fantastically complicated when you don't believe in evolution.” Nye continues and warns parents that even if they donot believe in evolution, “don't make your kids do it because we need them, we need scientifically literate voters and taxpayers for the future — we need engineers that can build stuff, solve problems.” Is that really true? Engineers apply present-day scientific principles to everyday life without utilizing the concept of evolutionary deep time. You do not need evolution to design cell phones, cars, appliances, and computers. For that matter, all technological advances lack any connection whatsoever to evolutionary principles. All of this makes one wonder, why does Bill Nye, a former engineer, not understand this basic fact. Is it perhaps that he is being blinded by his own false belief in evolution and that is distorting his view of reality?
Could Bill Nye, the Science Guy, be wrong about the meaning of science? He stated in an interview with the Associated Press in September 2012, “If we raise a generation of students who don't believe in the process of science, who think everything that we've come to know about nature and the universe can be dismissed by a few sentences translated into English from some ancient text, you're not going to continue to innovate.” Nye, like so many atheistic or agnostic scientists, takes offense at the invocation of the Bible. He refers to God’s Word as a “ridiculous ancient text” and simply overlooks the fact that science is rooted in biblical principles. The reason that we have this growing body of scientific knowledge is because the observable evidence is predictable, reliable, and understandable. It was created this way so that we can organize it, store it, and make it applicable to our lives. The amazing complexity and fine intricate patterns are all interwoven throughout every living system from the smallest microorganism to the vast expanses of our physical universe. It is a masterpiece to behold that can only come from a divine, infinite, omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent God. The Bible describes this truth in the following way:
“He (Christ) is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.” (Colossians 1:15 -17)

What You Can Do
This month, we are excited to share with you the book Christianity for Skeptics by Dr. Steven Kumar and Dr. Jonathan Sarfati. This excellent apologetic resource provides logical and easy to understand answers for the usual skeptical attacks against Christianity. It exposes the irrationality of atheism, and explores the spiritual and scientific consequences of a creation without a Creator. With thought-provoking arguments and eye-catching illustrations, this is the perfect book to give to a skeptical friend or family member. It will also bolster your own ability to defend your rational and scientifically-sound belief system based on God’s infallible Word.
In addition, this month's offer includes The Christian Roots of Science. This powerful DVD presentation by Creation Ministry International’s Dr. Jonathan Sarfati reveals the profound impact Christianity has had on the development of all the major branches of modern science. It will explain the reasons why other belief systems cannot support the logical and rational laws of science observed in our universe. This DVD presentation is the perfect answer to Bill Nye’s irrational claim that Creationism harms the development of science and stifles technological innovation. In fact, this DVD uses the historical record to prove that the exact opposite has proven true.
