The Big Cosmic Deception

Searching the Heavens

The nighttime skies have always brought a sense of mystery and grandeur. For generations, this has raised our wonder and curiosity to new heights. As we meditate in the quiet of the night and look up into the heavens, many questions arise regarding our ultimate purpose and significance in a universe that seemingly has no end. Depending on our location, on a clear, moonless night, we can see with the naked eye two to three thousand stars.

The heavens have always stirred up our inquisitiveness, generating questions like: How vast is the universe? Does it end or does it reach into eternity? How many stars are there? The list goes on. No wonder astronomy is one of the oldest scientific disciplines known to man. Its origins can be traced back to ancient Mesopotamia, Greece, India, China, Egypt, and Central America where astronomical observations were carefully collected and organized. Man has been intrigued by what the heavens reveal.

What we can observe today is phenomenal. We have instruments that are able to probe deep into space much farther than ever before. This is exemplified by the Hubble telescope that celebrated its 25th birthday on April 25, 2015. It orbits 373 miles above the earth while peering into deep space. It has revealed heavenly bodies and their dynamic intricacies that stagger the imagination. According to the Hubblesite.org website, Hubble has the amazing ability to transmit data to the tune of 120 gigabytes of pictures and information every week. This is equivalent to about 43,200 hard-covered books. Detailed accuracy is an important quality for the Hubble. This is how it is able to find images that are long distances away. These images are so far away that they are measured in light years (1 light year equals the distance light can travel in one year or 5.88 trillion miles). To focus on a designated spot that is trillions of miles away in space, the telescope has to be extremely sensitive. Hubble’s two mirrors were ground so that they do not deviate from a perfect curve by more than 1/800,000th of an inch. If Hubble’s primary mirror was scaled up to the diameter of the Earth, the biggest bump would be only six inches tall.

The Hubble’s pictures are truly incredible. They reveal stunning images of 3,000 galaxies of different shapes and sizes. These photos are called the “Hubble Deep Field” pictures. They were retrieved when inquisitive astronomers aimed the 2.5 billon-dollar telescope into an empty patch of space for ten days. It was a risk they took by keeping such an expensive instrument in one place when most projects would take hours, not days. It was a complete surprise to discover so much out there moving about clothed in mysterious eloquence.

All we have to do is look up at the heavens and we are filled with awe. The outer space objects have their own inner dynamics. We observe stars because of their fiery nuclear furnaces that send radiation out trillions and trillions of miles. These furnaces have the ability to fuse hydrogen into helium, thereby emitting tremendous amounts of energy. The Sun’s radiation just before it hits the earth’s atmosphere yields enough energy to light 3.8 trillion trillions 100-watt light bulbs simultaneously.

There is tremendous movement taking place within these bodies and everything moves at enormous speeds from the tiniest molecules within to gigantic galaxies outward. For example, if the earth were to stop rotating, you and I would be ejected at 1,000 miles per hour (mph) off the surface of our planet. This is 1.3 times faster than the speed of sound! In addition to the speed of the earth’s rotation, we have the revolution of earth moving 67,000 mph around the sun. That is twenty-two times faster than a high-powered rifle bullet. Couple this with the fact that our sun and the solar system are moving 490,000 mph inside of our Milky Way galaxy and the Milky Way hurls through the cosmos at 1.2 million mph. This is all moving in an orderly motion that requires enormous amounts of energy.

These heavenly objects follow systematic paths that are established with precise mathematical laws. This is an extremely huge factor when considering how the universe’s mechanically-dynamic system operates with such accuracy. This is yet one more example of the intricate and harmonious clockwork-like precision we see in the heavens with all of it pointing to an all-powerful Creator.

Our Created Cosmos

The only logical conclusion is that the cause of all these phenomena in the cosmos points us to an infinite Designer and Creator. One Who has left evidence behind so that we will know that He exists. The Apostle Paul emphasized this fact stating in Romans 1:20, "For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse." Paul refers to the "creation of the world" as the beginning of the cosmos. The reason was so that all men could witness God’s "invisible attributes."

Cluster WesterlundThey are expressed in things that we observe. These divine attributes are written in the host of stars that are in the expanse of the nighttime sky. We see awesome sights when we look at the images taken by the Hubble telescope produced over the past twenty-five years. It is the undeniable testimony of our Creator, Jesus Christ, who has graciously blessed us by giving us a glimpse of eternity.

God’s great power and splendor is displayed by the cosmos. Psalm 19:1 states, "The heavens proclaim the glory of God." Without any question, God's glory is expressed in the heavens. The Hubble telescope is attached to the earth’s orbit. It follows the earth through its designated elliptical orbit around the sun. During its annual cycle (one revolution around the sun), the Earth will travel with its steadfast motion passing through the same picturesque background of stars called the zodiac.

The zodiac is comprised of twelve basic constellations. They are the central groupings of stars that have identifiable features like Orion, the great hunter’s belt. These constellations were identified long ago, dating back to ancient Persia, Assyria, and Babylon. The basic twelve signs of the zodiac have names and configurations that have not changed over the years. Some even appear in the Bible. In Genesis 1:14, we read that the stars are used "for signs and seasons." This is affirmed in Job 38:32 where it speaks of "mazzaroth," the Hebrew word for "zodiac." Annually, the earth transverses the zodiac marking the seasons, which can easily be viewed by all humanity on earth no matter where they are.

In Job 38:31, it says "loose the belt of Orion." This is located on the celestial equator. It also says, "bind the cluster of the Pleiades," a constellation of the zodiac that is also called the Seven Sisters. In the next verse, Job 38:32 we read, "the Great Bear with its cubs." This constellation is called Ursa Major a.k.a. the Big Dipper that is located in the Northern Hemisphere. This tells us why these constellations of the zodiac remain intact for all of us to witness. The stars speak a universal language as noted in Psalm 19:2-4. In verse 19:2, we read "And night unto night reveals knowledge." It is a message of truth focused on God’s true glory, a glory that precedes all others. That is the glory of God incarnate, Jesus Christ.

Christ is also the infinite Maintainer of the universe and He has no equal. In Isaiah 40:26 we read, "Lift up your eyes on high, and see who has created these things, Who brings out their host by number; He calls them all by name, By the greatness of His might and the strength of His power; Not one is missing." The Creator, in the Person of Jesus Christ, has named every single star - all 45 million, trillion of them. There is no need for new stars to be born. All are accounted for. We live under the divine Maintainer who gave us life as He gave the universe its meaning. He provided the divine spark that began the creation. He maintains it by the power of His word. In the same way, He has, through His divine grace and mercy, given us much more. In Christ, God has given us eternity.

The Cosmos and Man’s Folly

The Hubble telescope captured a beautiful picture of three gaseous pillars of stardust and hydrogen called the Eagle Nebula. In 1995, it was given the name "The Pillars of Creation" by evolutionary astronomers who believed this to be the location where new stars are born. They based this on the evolutionary belief that star dust collapses into one point of space to produce a new star. They promote this even though they know that it is impossible for a star to form without another star being involved in this process. This begs the question, how could the first star form without the assistance of other stars?

In celebration of Hubble’s 25th anniversary, the most recent picture of the three pillars was compared to 1995 originals. It showed some new features. The Hubble astronomers claim that the jets of ionized radiation observed lengthening in the recent pictures were supposedly a result of gaseous matter interacting during the birth of the star. The problem was that the actual star formation could not be seen. This "birth" was entirely based on speculation, that it supposedly took place behind the visible pillars of the Eagle Nebula. What was actually being observed was the increase of radiation jets in one of the pillars. This was an interesting phenomenon, but had no observable connection to actual star formation. Because of many unknown factors in the study of objects so far from us, it is very apparent that there is great room for speculation and that star formation is a proverbial problem for evolution. Harvard astrophysicist, Abraham Loeb, stated, "The truth is that we don’t understand star formation at a fundamental level."1

There is sadly much foolishness being promoted based on a false evolutionary cosmology. The whole ideology is based on a Big Bang origin that defies common sense and logic as well as the laws of physics. It states that everything in the universe has its origins, including all matter and energy, at one single point in time and space. Evolutionary cosmologists speculate that all the matter in known existence today was at one time compressed into an infinitesimally small cosmic seed. Then, for some undetermined reason, this miniscule point expanded allegedly 13.7 billion years ago and it continues to spread out today. The initial conditions of the Big Bang origin of the universe have never been observed. This certainly fails the expectations of empirical science. It comes as no surprise that there is no agreement concerning how the universe expanded (inflated) with numerous speculative theories competing with one another for supremacy.

The Big Bang theory was contrived after observing that the universe was expanding. This was coupled with what was thought to be the heat energy leftover from the Big Bang. Creationists explain that with infinite power, God could easily expand the universe to the point at which we observe it today. The Scripture addresses this type of cosmic expansion without resorting to the Big Bang. Psalm 104:2 states, "Who covers yourself with light as with a garment: who stretches out the heavens like a curtain." Only God can bend or stretch space, speed-up the cosmic clocks and create a universe so that all can see His glory.

The universe does not have sufficient matter and energy to account for all the motion of the heavenly bodies. Astronomers have calculated that 95% of the matter and energy in the known universe is missing! Big Bang cosmologists are puzzled by this. Astronomer David Cline attempted to describe the problem in the March edition of Scientific American (2003). In an article entitled, "The Search for Dark Matter," Cline’s introductory remarks state,

The universe around us is not what it appears to be…The motions of this visible material reveal that it is mere flotsam on an unseen sea of unknown material. We know a little about that sea. The terms we use to describe its components, "dark matter" and "dark energy," serve mainly as expressions of our ignorance.

As we look at what secular cosmology offers us, we reflect on Cline’s last four words, "as expressions of our ignorance." The heavens that surround us are not man’s possession but God’s, He created and named all the stars in the universe. Who are we to proclaim the deep mysteries of the cosmos without the light of Christ? It becomes a big cosmic deception when we knowingly remove the Creator and replace Him with man’s unobservable and untestable Big Bang ideology. Perhaps, if the Hubble astronomers started with Genesis chapter 1, we would be in a much better place now. Johannes Kepler (1571- 1630) is considered the founder of Physical Astronomy. He is also famous for discovering the laws of planetary motion and founded the discipline of celestial mechanics. He was a devout Christian who summarized his discoveries in this way.

Since we astronomers are priests of the highest God in regard to the book of nature, it benefits us to be thoughtful, not of the glory of our minds, but rather, above all else, of glory of God.
