Programming of Life: DNA

The Programming of Life

Teaching Absurdity in Our Classrooms
The most perplexing question today for evolutionists is how life could originate from inert (lifeless) material. How life, which is marked by astonishing complexity and intricate design mechanisms all working together in an invisible harmony, began is considered the “mystery of mysteries” for secular theorists.

The properties required for life—even in a single cell—are so uniquely complex that no super machines made by man can compare. Every living cell produces energy with amazing efficiency. They go through remarkable growth and development stages, repair themselves and have many unique methods of reproduction to perpetuate their existence on planet earth. Also, each has its own amazingly complex information system programmed into its DNA which could only have resulted from a Super Intelligence. To attempt to explain that even the “simplest” of life forms arose by natural processes from dead matter is the highest degree of absurdity—and yet this is what is taking place in most of our classrooms.

The textbooks and multimedia presentations that school students are exposed to are full of this kind of absurdity.

Yet, it is arrogantly presented as a “scientific fact” that should be accepted without question. Paul warns about this very thing, when he says in Romans 1:21-22, “because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools.” Does it matter to you that most young people in our educational institutions are taught incorrect information, or that facts about the grave problems evolution faces with the origin of life are routinely censored?

There is an idiom that says, “God is in the details,” and this no truer than when it comes to the intricacies of biological systems. It is “in the details” of life where the weaknesses of evolutionary explanations fail completely. According to creationist Dr. Jerry Bergman, there are “millions of enormously intricate nanomachines that need to be present in order for life to exist on earth.” Attempting to explain these biochemical “machines” from an evolutionary paradigm are so insurmountable that doing so requires either stubborn ignorance or willful closed mindedness to the scientific facts.

A nanomachine is a complex microscopic molecule operating in a living system that has the ability to do work. These molecules have been revealed in recent decades with the aid of the electron microscope— which has a thousand times the resolution of the best optical microscopes. The discovery of this invisible “micro-world” has revolutionized our understanding of how life began and has given us far more details on how these living systems work. Such new discoveries make it clear that life is an extraordinary masterpiece of intricate, overlapping mechanisms that function perfectly together—as if they were built for each other! In other words, these miniature machines scream “design” and completely defy any naturalistic explanation. Only a Great Intelligence or Master Designer can account for them. Indeed, the light of the world, Jesus Christ, reveals Himself through these amazing living systems. He programmed biological life so that we can see His hand (and mind) in creation. As John 1:4 says, “In Him was the life, and the life was the light of man.”

The famous ATP-ADP molecular motor, which students study in a typical biology class, ranks right after DNA in importance for life. It is a great example of a nanomachine or a microscopic molecular complex that is designed to accomplish a designated task. All living organisms possess them and use them to produce energy. The ATP-ADP system is the tiniest nanomachine in the world. In order to sustain life, these micro-motors have to operate at 100% efficiency, which is equal to a machine using all of its electrical energy to do work without any of it going to waste! Such efficiency has no man-made equivalent. Automobiles are only about 21% efficient, with electric power plants a bit more at 30%. The ATP-ADP motor works in every plant and animal cell, where it lies on the mitochondrial membrane and uses small amounts of electricity to spin at 10,000 revolutions per minute. Every revolution produces three ATP molecules, each one having energy locked up inside. Under normal conditions, the amount of ATP a human body produces daily is calculated at 2 x 1026 molecules, with a mass 160 kg or 352 pounds. These molecules are never destroyed, but are recycled 2,000 to 3,000 times daily. If an automobile engine requires detailed plans, precise measurements and proper components—i.e., an intelligent design—to operate successfully, then it is only logical that the inhumanly efficient, life-sustaining ATP-ADP molecular machine needs superior forethought and intelligence to exist. As we all know, car engines have their shortcomings, but these nanomachines are true marvels that reflect a perfect, all-powerful Creator. The honest person will join the psalmist in saying, “Bless the Lord, all His works, in all places of His dominion. Bless the Lord, O my soul!” (Psalm 103:22).

Evolutionary Mythology
So how do evolutionists explain the origin of the magnificent ATP-ADP motor, when this machine had to appear fully formed and operational in order to produce the energy required to keep the first life going? And even if one of these molecular machines could evolve itself into existence, could such an undirected, unintelligent process account for the other million nanomachines needed to bring them together in a perfect operating system that is required for the simplest life to exist?

Despite the discovery of these nanomachines, students are still being taught the antiquated and disproven hypothesis of A.I. Oparin and J.B.S Haldane from the 1920’s, which proposed that lightening in the ancient atmosphere could have created the chemical building blocks of life. In 1953, Miller and Urey tested this proposition with an experiment that passed a spark of electricity through gases that allegedly existed before there was life on earth. The “sparked” chemical residues were collected in water and later analyzed. Among the many compounds formed, they found some basic organic compounds that appear in proteins, but the results were not conclusive. The experiment also had many flaws, particularly in the gasses chosen. Oxygen was eliminated because it would actually prevent the formation of organic molecules. But the hypothesis was proven incorrect more than a decade after the results were published when geochemical data suggested the presence of oxygen in the earth’s “early” environment. As reported by Jon Cohen in 1995 in Science, the “primitive atmosphere” looked nothing like what Miller–Urey proposed. Jonathan Wells cites this as one of the prevailing fallacies in our school textbooks in his Icons of Evolution book, asking, “Are we teaching our biology students mythology rather than science?”

The Present Evolutionary Ignorance
In a particularly honest moment during an interview with the Counter Balance Foundation, outspoken
atheistic/evolutionist Richard Dawkins expressed the difficulty evolution has with the origin of life:

…it's a step which we don't fully understand—mainly because it happened such a
long time ago, and under conditions when the Earth was very different. And so it's
not necessarily possible to simulate again the chemical conditions of the origin of life.
There are various theories for how it might have happened. None of them is yet fully
convincing. It may be that none of them ever will be, because it may be that we shall
never know fully what the conditions were.

Ironically, Dawkins originally became famous with the publication of his book, The Selfish Gene, where he stated that a living molecule could naturally appear with all the capabilities needed to replicate itself—by chance. As Dawkins wrote, “This may seem very unlikely sort of accident to happen. So it was. It was exceedingly improbable.” He believes that millions of years of time increase the probability of random evolutionary processes accomplishing this astounding feat without violating the laws of physics and chemistry, but by its very nature, it does. Time actually works against Dawkins’ hypothesis because science has shown that long, complicated molecules tend to degrade over time rather than grow more complex or multiply, much less assemble themselves into the molecular machines needed for life. Indeed, the statistical probability of just one living nanomachine arising from random molecules is so infinitesimally small, it’s comparable to a tornado passing through a junkyard and creating a Boeing 747!

So, when backed into a corner regarding modern findings about the complex origins of life, where do evolutionists turn? To outer space—and to aliens! Yes, rather than a divine Being, they resort to the possibility of a superior race of space aliens “seeding” life on planet earth in some unknown way. This is commonly known as “science fiction,” yet this is what our kids are being taught in our public schools. Intelligent Design and creation are banished from the classroom, but space aliens are more than welcome. Rather than science, these theories are founded on blind hope and a baseless faith in unknown mechanisms. They employ long periods of unspecified time in uncertain conditions, which defy the laws of chance and probability to produce the astonishing complexity of life by chemical processes not yet discovered. Such absurdity ought to have no place in our schools, especially in the name of science.

Programming of Life
Former Harvard evolutionary paleontologist Steven J. Gould, an atheist and renowned author who, like Dawkins, was lauded in his time by evolutionists, once made this revealing statement, “We are glorious accidents of an unpredictable process with no drive to complexity, not the expected results of evolutionary principles that yearn to produce a creature capable of understanding the mode of its own necessary construction.”

He believed that biological evolution is a mysterious, unpredictable process and that life was a one-time “fluke” which, as mentioned above, is statistically impossible—even by a glorious accident. The irrational faith that this nonetheless happened ignores another insurmountable mountain that evolution has to climb. It is the DNA code, which has the specific purpose of programming life. All biological systems are defined and created through DNA. To accomplish this task, it uses a “language” written in biological code. Where did this coded language come from, and who wrote it for every living creature? According to Dr. Donald Johnson, who has earned Ph.D.s in both Computer Science and Information Science, this is another question that evolution needs to address. As one who programs software for computers in order to accomplish specific tasks, he understands the role intelligence plays in his relatively simple work and asks, “How did nature write the code—the program—to sustain life?”

One can only logically conclude that the “code of life” must have come from an outside source possessing infinite knowledge, power and love—in other words, a benevolent Creator. In Psalm 139:15-16, the prophet David celebrates life, writing that his unformed body was made in the “secret place” of his mother’s womb, where it was “skillfully wrought,” or as some versions say, “knitted together.” These words virtually describe how DNA molecules in our genes untwist themselves out of their spirals and recombine (knit together) with DNA from the opposite sex during reproduction in order to (skillfully) “program” a new human being. In a very true sense, the picture David paints here anticipates the discovery of how the most important nanomachine molecule of all operates. As he wrote:

My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought
in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And
in Your book they all were written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were
none of them.

Dr. Donald Johnson has written a book entitled, Programming of Life, with a companion DVD. His mission is to destroy the myth of biological evolution by demonstrating beyond question the complexity of these nanomachines that function in exquisitely designed living systems. He convincingly shows that the programmed language code, which resides in the DNA of every living cell, could not possibly result from random naturalistic forces.

A Call to Action
Like our ministry, Dr. Johnson believes that too many young minds and souls are succumbing to evolutionary deception and absurd “facts,” and that the question of where biological information comes from needs to be addressed in our classrooms. As a result, CSI’s “Operation Salt” will be using Dr. Johnson’s materials to expose the atheistic indoctrination that is growing exponentially in our public schools, as well as causing confusion and fear in evangelical educational institutions.

We are offering Dr. Johnson’s Programming of Life book. The book explains how information theory and programming language work and apply to living systems in an easy-to-understand way. Because all the evidence is presented in objective, scientific terms, it is also suitable for use in public schools and biology classes. Some may find fault with its lack of spiritual content, but we believe that, like all truth, it has the power to cause open-minded students to question what they are being taught. We wouldn’t offer resources like this if we didn’t believe strongly in their creation-affirming value.

Please continue to pray for us as we move forward attempting to be “salt and light” in this very deceived world. And, as God leads you, please help us keep ministering to others with a generous financial gift. Thanks for all you do for the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. What a joy it is to serve our Creator, the Life-Giver, Sustainer and Redeemer, who gives us so much for which to be thankful. God bless you!
