Nobody Speaks of God; Therefore, God Does Not Exist

 


The halls have been silenced; the classrooms are void and empty. The great majority of our educational institutions, originally conceived to teach students about our Creator’s wonders and grace in the early years of our republic, are now permeated with darkness.

Teachers, professors, and educators are gagged and told not to utter the words God, Creator, Creation and even Intelligent Design. When such words are spoken, or mere inferences are posed about alternatives to evolution in a classroom, sirens and alarms go off, alerting “gravediggers” like the ACLU, the National Academy of Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and many others. Armed with their “legal” clubs and shovels, who rush to silence such utterances, hoping to bury them forever. If this sounds like something out of a police state, you’re right. Unfortunately, this is happening in America.

The goal of the self-appointed censors mentioned above is to turn the U.S. into a secular state, where belief in God is outlawed from the public square and denied all government support. One of their tactics is to suppress all truth about the existence of a Creator in connection with science in our nation’s schools. God is to be completely censored out and replaced with naturalistic evolution. These “elites” use the fallacious cry of “separation of church and state”—which cannot be found anywhere in our Constitution, but is actually part of the former Russian Constitution (1936)—used to silence all critics. Perhaps German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche was, indeed, a prophet. He envisioned a world absent of any acknowledgment of God, musing: How would anyone know of His existence then? Unfortunately, our educational system is increasingly adopting this practice. In our public schools and universities and throughout our science establishment, God is not to be mentioned—as if He doesn’t exist. By censoring any acknowledgement of the Creator, our educational system essentially proclaims, as Nietzsche did, “God is dead.”

If these barriers to free speech and academic freedom are allowed to go on unopposed, the walls of censorship will continue to grow thicker and harder to knock down. With liberal judges siding with evolutionists in creation/evolution cases and lending more and more credibility to complete naturalism in science, our Creator is being literally “ruled out” of our childrens’ lives. The One who imparts the breath of life to every creature on earth is increasingly being absented from millions of young minds. Such bold censorship creates fertile ground for raising a generation of atheists, like the “madman” in Nietzsche’s book, Gay Science (1888), who declares, “Where is God? Where is the One that spun the creation of the world into existence?” Nietzsche also wrote,

        Do you hear nothing as yet of the noise of the gravediggers who are burying God?
        Do we smell nothing as yet of the divine decomposition? Gods, too, decompose.
        God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him.

In Nietzsche’s parable, the madman arrives on the scene earlier than expected. If we continue to let our public educational institutions, which comprise at least 80% of our student population, to operate the way they currently are, the likely result will also come “too soon.” If the rantings of Nietzsche’s fictional crazy man come to characterize our next generation, what’s to keep America from following in Europe’s secular, atheistic footsteps?


A Visionary
After studying evolution and its consequences, William Jennings Bryan, the three-time presidential candidate, Secretary of State, and “Great Commoner” of the people, knew that he had to speak out against the inherent dangers of Darwinism in the early 1920s. Understanding that such thinking would bring atheism to our culture and create a pathway to the total destruction of the soul—and ultimately of mankind—he opposed it with extraordinary passion. As he received testimonies and read letters from students, parents, and pastors describing how professors and educators were using evolution to undermine their faith, he grew indignant and courageously set out to warn America. Using his great oratory skills, he dedicated the last years of his life to this noble cause, which eventually brought him to the famous Scopes trial in 1925 in Dayton, Tennessee. Leading up to that was his growing awareness of the effect that evolutionary theory was having on the nation of Germany.

Feeling that it was immoral for Christians to be involved in killing each other, Bryan did not believe in war. However, in the latter part of his life, his thinking on this changed as he realized that the influence of both Darwinism and Nietzsche on Germany made avoiding war virtually impossible. Bryan was deeply impacted by the book, Headquarters Nights (1917), by Vernon Kellog, a zoologist from Stanford University, based on extensive interviews he had with German officers. He read of German thinkers, particularly military officers, who said things like, “[Darwin’s] Natural Selection, based on violent and fatal competitive struggle, is the Gospel of the German Intellectuals.” A German leader once even stated: “Why, for the good of the world, there should be war.” Bryan ultimately concluded that Darwinian materialistic philosophy was an underlying cause of World War I. Benjamin Kidd’s book, Science of Power (1918), further identified Darwinism as the philosophical foundation for Nietzsche’s “God is dead” declaration. Kidd was a leading Social Darwinist who applied evolutionary principles to all societal structures. He wrote, “Give us the Young and we will create a new mind and new earth in a single generation.” These writings also gave Bryan the ammunition to condemn evolution as a “doctrine of the degenerate,” which would “eulogize war as necessary to man’s development.”

Bryan’s warnings about the dangers of evolutionary ideology to mankind were truly visionary. In 1920 at the World Brotherhood Congress, he proclaimed that the allegedly scientific theory was “the most paralyzing influence with which civilization has had to deal in the last century.” The rise of Hitler and Nazism in Germany later proved Bryan right. The same social Darwinian notions that undergirded WW I belied World War II, leading to the loss of over 70 million lives, including civilians. It also produced one of the most morally reprehensible events in mankind’s history: the Nazis Holocaust that “eliminated” between 11 and 15 million “undesirables.”

Bryan’s opposition to evolution was also fueled by an extensive 1916 survey on the religious beliefs of college professors and students by James Leuba. Entitled, The Belief in God and Immortality, a Psychological, Anthropological and Statistical Study, it revealed a direct correlation between higher levels of college education and disbelief in God. It additionally indicated that the lowest level of belief, 16.9%, was found among biology professors, where Darwinian evolution was already entrenched. In that regard, the results of modern surveys are dramatically worse.

One involving the members of the National Academy of Science in 1998, as reported in Nature, the prestigious science journal, showed that a whopping 93% of the academy were either atheists or agnostics.

A similar Gallup poll in 2005 compared educational levels to belief in evolution, showing that support for evolution stood at 65% at the postgraduate stage. It also indicated that acceptance of evolution decreased significantly among the less educated, dropping dramatically to 20% for those at the high school level and under. The most amazing statistic, however, was an average societal acceptance rate of 35% for evolution, which has remained about the same since 2005. Polls by Harris, Pew Research, and Gallup have repeatedly shown that evolutionary theory, especially regarding mankind, is still significantly unaccepted in America. Bryan’s concerns in the early 1920s were well founded. A direct correlation exists between the acceptance of evolution and atheism. Bryan’s warning have gone virtually unheeded for over 80 years, and today our institutions of higher education have become great havens of godlessness.


Mocking God Has Its Consequences
It was the Scopes Trial in 1925 where American gravediggers first assembled and organized to do battle against God. It was a set-up designed to challenge Tennessee’s Butler Act (1925), which made it unlawful to teach that mankind evolved from lower life forms. Famous lawyer Clarence Darrow led the charge, defending the man accused of breaking the law, John Scopes. The prosecutor was William Jennings Bryan. However, from beginning to the end, it was a “circus”—including sideshows—set up by Dayton businessmen to drum up revenue for a community going through tough times. Showcasing two of the great orators of the land, it was promoted like a prize fight between opposing giants: Darrow, an admirer of Darwin and Nietzsche, who called himself an agnostic, taking on “the face of Christianity” and its principles embodied by Bryan. It was also the first and only time in our legal history where a prosecutor also served as a star witness. If Nietzsche were alive, he would have enjoyed the performance, as the ACLU and their supporters, led by Darrow, used the trial not to defend Scopes or the theory of evolution, but to make a mockery of biblical teachings. Their goal, much like Nietzsche’s gravediggers, was to bury faith in a Creator in our public education system. They tricked Bryan into taking the witness stand and effectively put his beliefs on trial. Darrow fired question after question about the Bible at Bryan and did his best to make Bryan’s answers sound foolish. It became a spectacle, with the worldwide press cheering, laughing, and spinning their stories—with most in Darrow’s corner. Bryan easily won the case, but never had his chance to question Darrow (as had been promised) to expose the foolishness and horrific consequences of evolution. Darrow deceitfully dropped the case before it was his turn to take the stand. Indicative of the sideshow the trial became, allowing a prosecuting attorney or defense lawyer to take the witness stand was a violation of all legal precedence, and has never been repeated in our judicial history. Unfortunately, this case, a true travesty of our judicial system, opened the door to removing God from our classrooms. While Bryan won, the ridicule of his beliefs by Darrow and the press made Christianity look silly and conferred respectability on evolution. It was the first time the naturalistic ideology publically reared its ugly head in America and became the beginning of its cancer-like spread.

There is silence about our Creator in our schoolrooms today, because Nietzsche’s modern gravediggers have been largely successful at imposing their godless scientific agenda in America since the Scopes Trial. This outrage is even worse when one considers that it is only the 3% of Americans who consider themselves atheists/agnostics that are forcing their views on our country—despite most Americans believing just the opposite! A 2006 Pew Research survey reported that an overwhelming 63% of Americans believed that God created the universe. Is it possible that, as Romans 1 warns, the current difficulties our nation is experiencing is, at least in part, God’s judgment on the success this very small minority has had in suppressing the truths of creation here? As Paul wrote:

The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them (Romans 1:18-19).

Romans tells us that the invisible God made Himself clearly visible in creation, so that mankind has no reason to fail to give Him the glory and thanks due Him. “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse” (Romans 1:20). All we have to do is open our eyes and hearts, and we will behold God’s glory everywhere! Because He lives, we who believe in Him must not neglect to tell the next generation of God’s wondrous deeds—or allow the truths about Him to be buried and kept from view. This is not a small issue. The welfare of our nation and, more importantly, the eternal destiny of our children are literally at stake!

CSI is in the forefront of this battle, but we can’t do it alone.
