Global Warming: It's a Hot Topic

In recent weeks, Americans have seen the foundations of our financial system deeply shaken. With our banking structure in a crisis and the stock market in a tailspin, it has sometimes felt like our economy has been near total collapse.

And while gas prices are slowly coming down, our energy policy has created increased fuel costs that affect every form of transportation and product, including food. These challenges have hit us like a “perfect storm,” knocking us right off our feet! However, as believers, we need to understand the issues, while invoking our heavenly Father’s wisdom to prove what is true and not get caught up in emotional hysterics. That said, the literal “hot topic” I want to return to today is global warming (GW). With its doomsday prophesies of irrevocable damage to the planet, it continues to impact politics worldwide—and I believe it also plays a role in our current economic woes.

According to typical GW rhetoric, man is the ultimate culprit. At least that is what most in the mass media tell us. Climatologists who promote the GW agenda claim that man’s carbon-based emissions are causing the earth’s temperatures to rise and will create catastrophic conditions. Among the many tragic and apocalyptic tales spun in this gloom and doom scenario: The ice caps will melt and ocean levels will rise by 23 feet, flooding the continents and threatening the welfare of millions!

While being told that it’s all based on solid scientific evidence, the public has been hit hard with inaccurate information like this. Even some Christians have been duped by the notion that man has to save planet earth by ridding ourselves of every form of carbon-producing energy that emits the basic compound of CO2. Such rhetoric is cloaked in fear and designed to implement a global social order with the potential of changing every person’s life.

A concerted movement exists to establish a universal governance of standards and policies to which all developed nations will have to submit. But what if they’re wrong about man-induced climate change, and what about the millions (billions?) of dollars being wasted on it in this troubled economy, such as the production of inefficient, cost-increasing, corn-based ethanol?

The Alarmist: Al Gore
Former Vice President Al Gore has become a leading American GW activist. Believing that man has to save himself from this allegedly self-induced “crisis” has become something of a spiritual quest for him. Gore’s passion has driven him to speak all over the world, chanting the end-time warning that global climate change is a mega-disaster in waiting.

It led him to produce the film, An Inconvenient Truth, grossing $49 million worldwide. It received an Academy Award for best documentary in 2006 and echoed Gore’s stated feelings that:

Humanity is sitting on a ticking time bomb. If the vast majority of the world’s scientists are right, we have just ten years to avert a major catastrophe that could send our entire planet into a tail-spin of epic destruction involving extreme weather, floods, droughts, epidemics and killer heat waves beyond anything we have ever experienced.

The hoopla surrounding Gore’s movie subsequently led to his receiving the Noble Peace Prize in 2007, along with Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), “for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about manmade climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change (emphasis added).” Now on DVD, An Inconvenient Truth has been circulated in our schools and is being used worldwide in many educational curriculums.

Nothing Like It in the Universe
John 1:1 declares that Jesus Christ is “the Word,” the Logos, the rationale of the universe. Those who know Him need not fear in the worst of circumstances. However, those whose lives are not centered in Him will inevitably seek to use problems like GW to pursue their own agendas—and their agendas are man-centered—not God-centered.

Romans 1:18, tells us that, “The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness.” I believe that not only are manmade GW advocates distorting many of the facts, they are suppressing the truth about our Creator.

As creationists, we know that God created an amazing, life-supporting system on earth that exists nowhere else in the universe. Our planet is unique in being the perfect place in the whole cosmos for the existence of life. Jay Richards and Guillermo Gonzalez build a strong scientific case for earth’s singular creation in their book and DVD entitled The Privileged Planet. Based on the laws of probability, they show earth’s conditions are so unique that it would be virtually impossible to reproduce the exact conditions, even among the trillions and trillions of stars occupying the vastness of space!

Whether it be the correct composition of atmospheric gases, the amount of water on the planet, the chemicals that make up the earth’s crust, the right mass, inclination and position of our planet, the size of the moon and sun, the position of the sun in the Milky Way, and even the specific type radiation from the sun, the conditions designed to support life are intricately and delicately woven together in a very special way.

The earth is truly a marvelous creation! As the Bible says, it was specifically designed for human life.

            For this is what the Lord says—He who created the heavens, He is God;
He who fashioned and made the earth, He founded it; He did not create it
to be empty, but formed it to be inhabited—He says: “I am the Lord, and
there is no other.” — Isaiah 45:18.

Not only was our planet made by our Creator to support life, He also infused it with built-in safeguards. It is far more resilient than we realize—or than what evolutionary science wants to tell us. The earth is covered with 70% water, which is very important in controlling heat. Much the way automobiles use a mixture of anti-freeze and water to cool the engine and prevent overheating, the earth’s water supply keeps our planet’s temperature in check.

As water absorbs heat, it evaporates, forms clouds and cools the surface. Its cycles of heating, evaporation, and rainfall impact biology worldwide. When you consider that the earth has just the right amount of water coverage to fuel this immensely complex heating/cooling system, you have to be willing to admit that it was not a matter of random chance (evolution), but wisely created to stabilize the climate. That is, unless you believe your car’s cooling system evolved itself into existence as well!

Weather is another component designed to sustain life on earth. If the sun heated our globe without interference, infrared radiation would raise its temperature to a scorching average of 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Temperatures would vary greatly from day to night, and it could not support life as we know it today. However, the interaction of hot and cold air mixing with evaporated water from its oceans and lakes gives our planet a whole new dynamic. These exchanges produce a protective blanket around the earth called the Green House Effect that keeps our temperature and climate relatively stable. This atmospheric blanket is composed of 70% to 90% water vapor and a much smaller percentage of “green house gases,” like carbon dioxide and methane. It is important to understand that GW’s most vital ingredient is water vapor. When there is a great deal of water vapor, we have a lot of cloud coverage, which in turn acts as a cooling agent by blocking the sun’s infrared energy. Because it was intelligently designed to support life, our weather is unlike any other planet in the universe—and the earth is amazingly resilient, no matter what Al Gore and his follow climatologists say. We are called to speak the truth in Christ’s love, and I believe very strongly this is one area where we have to set the record straight, especially in today’s highly charged political and economic climate.

Global Warming or Global Governance?
One of the best resources I’ve found to set the record straight is the DVD, Global Warming or Global Governance?, by Dr. Michael S. Coffman. Featuring numerous scientists, it presents a great deal of scientific evidence to prove that all we are going through is a typical warming cycle. For instance, it shows that the so-called “Hockey Stick Diagram,” which states that temperatures stayed the same until the 1800s, when the industrial revolution took place, and then rises sharply like the bottom of hockey stick, is bogus.

When you include the Medieval warming period, which was far warmer than today and was followed by the “Little Ice Age” in the fourteenth century, the temperature diagram dramatically changes and looks like climate variations occur in a cyclical manner. There is growing contention about GW within the scientific community that is not being reported. Coffman clearly shows that nearly 50% of them do not agree that it is a manmade problem. In fact, rather than being a pollutant, CO2 is an extremely beneficial gas that could increase food production by 20 to 40 percent and dramatically improve the health of earth’s ecosystems if its concentration doubled.

In the DVD Phyllis Schlafly, of the Eagle Forum, also warns that affirming manmade global warming will subject us to a global governance of worldwide laws determining how we utilize energy (and live). This Global Warming DVD is a great resource for those who have questions and want answers on this controversial issue.

Dr. Gray is often called the father of seasonal hurricane forecasting. He is Emeritus Professor of Atmospheric Science at Colorado State University (CSU), and head of the Tropical Meteorology Project at CSU's Department of Atmospheric Sciences.

We are living in difficult and consequential times. By God’s grace we will all weather the
current economic storm and come out better on the other side. However, because Creation Studies Institute (CSI) depends on sacrificial gifts from our supporters, conditions could hit our
ministry hard in the short run. So, we ask for your prayers.

May God bless and guide you in all your ways!
