Teaching Evolution: Dangerous Consequences

Teaching Evolution: Dangerous Consequences

The Columbine Connection

On April 28, 1998, a very angry and depressed high school student wrote in his diary that he and his friend, Dylan, nicknamed "V" for Vulcan, wanted to commit such a violent act that their names would never be forgotten in all of history. He went on to write,

Sometime in April next year me and V (friend) will get revenge. Will kick natural selection up a few notches. If we learn the art of time bombs we set hundreds of them around roads, bridges. buildings, gas stations, anything that will cause damage and chaos. It will be like the LA riots, the Oklahoma Bombing, World War II, Vietnam, Duke all mixed together. I want to leave a lasting impression on the world.

This plan would eventually become a reality almost exactly one year later. On April 20, 1999, Eric Harris and his friend, Dylan Klebold (a.k.a. Vulcan), would commit the Columbine High School massacre. They had planned to take many lives that day. They placed two twenty-pound propane bombs in the school cafeteria, first hiding them in two large duffle bags similar to the one used by the Boston Marathon Bombers in 2013. Fortunately, because of faulty wiring and poor construction, the bombs never detonated and 500 students' lives were spared. In 32 minutes, Harris and Klebold took 13 lives including twelve students and one teacher. They also injured 21 additional students before they committed suicide. This massacre is still reported as the deadliest high school shooting in spite of the numerous mass shootings that have followed since. During the attack, Eric Harris was wearing a T-shirt that read "Natural Selection." He and Klebold were firm believers in Darwinian Evolution as indicated by the videos and website Harris published.

Both boys had a fascination for Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection, and felt that they were going to be natural killers by demonstrating evolution's protocol that only the strongest survive.

These two miscreants adopted director Oliver Stone's bizarre and psychologically dark 1994 film "Natural Born Killers" as their theme for the massacre. The film's acronyms, NBK, became the title of their devious year-long plan. Stone's psychologically dark movie of two depraved mass murderers who became pop culture icons became Harris and Klebold's inspiration.

This brutal, incoherent, but critically acclaimed Hollywood snuff film portrayed these two fictional characters as being haunted by demons from their past. A history of poverty and abuse was to blame for this couple's twisted mindset, eventually driving them to become notorious natural-born killers. Toward the end of the movie, one of the characters says, "You and me...we're not even the same species. I used to be you, then I evolved. From where you're standing, you're a man. From where I'm standing you're an ape."

The Columbine murderers considered themselves superior to their peers. In their minds, they were super human, a new species moving up the evolutionary tree similar to the fictional characters in Stone's movie. On the day of the Columbine massacre, those two fictional characters in "Natural Born Killers" re-emerged in the souls and minds of Harris and Klebold. As they moved from place to place, they callously killed and injured their peers. In the aforementioned diary, Harris wrote the following entry:

"I feel like God and I wish I was, having everyone being OFFICIALLY lower than me. I already know that I am higher than most anyone...."

On Harris's website, he posted:

"YOU KNOW WHAT I LOVE!!!? Natural SELECTION!!!!!!... it's the best thing that ever happened to the Earth. Getting rid of all the stupid and weak organisms...but it's all natural!!! YES!"

The evolutionary connection to the Columbine killers is so real that you have to be blind to miss it. Barry Arrington was an attorney for six of the student's families at Columbine and he agrees that there is an obvious connection to Darwin's theory and the mindset of this evil duo. He writes,

I read through every single page of Eric Harris's journals; I listened to all of the audio tapes and watched the videotapes... It became evident to me that Harris consciously saw his actions as logically arising from what he had learned about evolution. Darwinism served as his personal intellectual rationale for what he did. There cannot be the slightest doubt that Harris was a worshipper of Darwin and saw himself as acting on Darwinian principles.

Why Such a Tragedy
Although there are claims that these boys were being bullied at Columbine, the FBI's lead investigator and several psychiatrists concluded on the fifth anniversary of their murder spree that Eric Harris was a clinical psychopath and that Dylan Klebold was depressed. Perhaps there might be another perspective to consider. Could their anger and depressed, weak minds have led to their own loss of identity? Could that result in a failure to relate with their peers and society in general? They created their own sick world and let their inner demons take over. They left behind a tragedy that would lead to 17 copycat school shootings resulting in 66 deaths and 49 innocent people wounded.

Nick Turse, journalist and historian, in the winter 2000 issue of the journal the 49th Parallel, suggested that these boys were revolutionists waging war on the innocent by taking on the educational system that would incubate the next generation. He wrote, "Who would not concede that terrorizing the American machine, at the very site where it exerts its most powerful influence, is a truly revolutionary task?"

Harris and Klebold embarked on a plan that would attack a place that represented the continuation of moral values of which they wanted no part. They lived in their own naturalistic evolutionary world where the strongest survive and the weak have to go. Harris referenced this Nazi idea repeatedly in his journal when he wrote, "and let natural selection take its course. All the fat, ugly, retarded, crippled******, stupid****heads would die ... Maybe then the human race can actually be proud of itself."

Both boys took part in their own personal revolution at Columbine using Darwin's natural selection as their rationale. A revolution that, at its center, would have no hope and defy God's law including murdering the innocent.

Consequences for not Honoring God

Few are aware of the connection between evolution and the columbine killers. However, Darrell Scott, father of Rachel Scott, the first young person murdered at the Columbine massacre, researched videos and journals of the killers and came to the same conclusion of an undeniable link. Darrell lost his daughter, Rachel, but his son, Craig, was mercifully spared. He hid under a table in the library while two of his friends nearby were fatally shot. On May 27, 1999, Darrell Scott gave an impactful testimony before the House Judiciary Committee's subcommittee dealing with firearms legislation and current gun laws. Below are just a few quotes taken from his gripping testimony.

Men and women are three-part beings. We all consist of body, soul, and spirit. When we refuse to acknowledge a third part of our make-up, we create a void that allows evil, prejudice, and hatred to rush in and wreak havoc ... What has happened to us as a nation? We have refused to honor God, and in so doing, we open the doors to hatred and violence ... We do need a change of heart and a humble acknowledgment that this nation was founded on the principle of simple trust in God!

This statement appears copied over and over again on the web in many different forms including the actual live stream of Scott's statement given 17 years go. It was a direct attack on the exclusion of prayer in our schools. He wanted to use the death of his daughter and 12 other individuals at Columbine as an example of the level of spiritual depravity that has gripped our nation. He did not want the focus of Columbine to be used for political reasons as a symbol for more gun control legislation. Scott wanted the emphasis to be placed on the real problem, because the educational system has ignored the spiritual side of man. God has been removed from our school campuses. This has resulted in the world filling that void with evil prejudice as evidenced in the lives of Klebold and Harris.

Because man is created in God's image (Gen. 1 :26-27) he, like his Creator, is a triune being. During his testimony, Scott described this truth very well by referring to humans as a combination of "body, soul and spirit." How can you neglect this part of man in the institutions that train up the next generation? This certainly defies the evolutionary claim that our ancestors are apes. More importantly, as a Christian, Scott understands this basic principle. If we do not give thanks and honor to God, "we open the doors to hatred and violence."
The scripture teaches this in Romans chapter one.

28And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting,· 29being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness,· full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, 30 backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful"· 32who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them. --Romans 1:28-32

Darrell Scott echoed the same message in 2003. In a press release to the Texas State Board of Education, he spoke out against the dogmatic teaching of evolution in their biology textbooks. He stated that ideas have consequences. When we think that we are nothing but animals, and that the strongest shall survive, it becomes a justification "for heinous behavior." He went on, "Hitler did it. Stalin did it. And Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, killers of my daughter ... did just that." He went on in this statement and tied "bullying" to a survival of the fittest mentality noting, "why should we be surprised when some students take this corrosive 'kill or be killed ' concept on to the playground or street?"

These statements speak to us years later because little has changed. Scott's press release was titled, "Bad Science Produces Bad Consequences. "There have been other school shootings similar to Columbine that follow Darwinian Evolution's teaching of natural selection and they also produced bad consequences. On November 7, 2007, Pekka-EricAuvinen, a Finnish student motivated by Darwinian Natural Selection, killed 6 students and 2 officials from Jokela High School in Tuusula, Finland. Before the shooting, he posed in a video and stated, "Mankind is unimportant... the weak should die while the strong live."

Another example of bad science producing bad consequences was Seung-Hui Cho who admitted that he too was influenced by Darwinist ideas. He committed one of the deadliest massacres on a college campus in April 2007 at Virginia Tech University killing 32 people. Cho left notes before the massacre stating that "the weak had to die."

Perhaps the most dramatic proof that teaching evolution leads to dangerous consequences was given by serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. Dahmer committed the rape, murder and dismemberment of seventeen men and boys between 1978 and 1991. The last interview before he was executed was given to Dateline NBC, in a prison chapel in 1999. He said,

If a person doesn't think that there is a God to be accountable to, then what's the point of trying to modify your behavior to keep it within acceptable ranges? That's how I thought anyway. I always believed the theory of evolution as truth, that we all just came from the slime [by chance]. When we died, you know, that was it, there was nothing.

For years, our public educational systems and liberal media entertainment outlets have been preaching that evolution is true while hiding the consequences. Perhaps they are willfully turning a blind eye to the truth. In our Messiah's words, we are told, "19And this is the condemnation , that the light has come into the world , and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed." (John 3: 19-20)

Christ has called us to be the light of the world. We are instructed to speak the truth in love and make a stand in the righteousness of Jesus - the righteousness that comes by faith. The Columbine massacre and the ones that followed were consequences of darkness. That darkness enveloped these killers because they did not want the light of God in their lives. We cannot be discouraged in these times, but we should move forward in the light of Christ by speaking the truth of Creation and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This ministry represents this truth and we are asking you to partner with us in declaring Christ's righteousness in a very confused and chaotic world.

Please continue to pray for our ministry and thanks for all of your generous support!
