Evolution’s Fantasyland
Pixie Dust in the Universe As children growing up, we embellished the make-believe world. Our minds were free to fly to unknown places as we used our imaginations to play in our own fantasies. We loved fairytales and all those picture books filled with bright colors and playful figures that left us with pleasurable memories. It gave us a sense that there was another world out there where we could go to have fun. Those artists, poets, and authors were given artistic license to distort reality and show us a magical world. As adults today, there are times when we allow ourselves into the doors of fiction, whether it is in a movie, theme park, or inspirational book. Many have cashed into this fantasy world, as exemplified by Walt Disney and his Magic Kingdom. He found the magical niche where America and the rest of the world would follow his imaginative path. Walt and other creative geniuses had the ability to think outside the box and create made-up dreams with fairies and fairy dust. They found children, followed by their parents, searching for a safe, wholesome place to retreat and spend their vacation time and hard-earned money. It has been demonstrated that people all over the world have an insatiable appetite for the fictional world.
When you take the evolutionists’ claims seriously, you might have a sense that you are on a vacation in fantasyland. All you have to do is carefully observe what is being said about the beginning of the Universe. They say it began with a big explosion that occurred a very long time ago (13.7 billion years ago) in an unknown place. They claim that this is where everything came from–the light, the stars, the planets, the Earth and all the celestial bodies that we see today. Evolutionists proposed that everything, including all matter and energy in the universe, was in one spot appropriately termed the cosmic egg. For some unknown reason, it inexplicably exploded with a great deal of energy in what is popularly known as the Big Bang. It is believed that this cosmic egg composed of mysterious unknown material expanded and spread into space, cooled and coalesced into the universe we see today. This is what they tell us, but no one knows how this cosmological model strangely inflated and separated into space. It certainly feels like we are in fantasyland.
Adding to the mystery, when we examine what is in the universe, we are surprised to discover that 95% of the mass/energy predicted in the Big Bang is missing. Looks like magic! David Cline, professor of Physics and Astrophysics at UCLA, confirms this seemingly incomprehensible phenomenon stating,
The Universe around us is not what it appears to be… The motions of this visible material reveal that it is mere flotsam on an unseen sea of unknown material. We know a little about that sea. The terms we use to describe its components (“dark matter” and “dark energy”) serve mainly as expressions of our ignorance. (David Cline, “The Search for Dark Matter,” Scientific American, (vol. 288. March 2003) p52.
What we actually observe in the universe is a heavenly masterpiece to which there is no comparison. There are galaxies, stars, planets and enormous objects traveling at huge speeds. The Sun is traveling 514,000 miles per hour (828,000 km/h) and our Milky Way galaxy is moving at 1.3 million miles per hour (2.1 million km/hr), and all these bodies are moving together by set universal laws. These massive celestial bodies like our planet Earth are moving on predictable paths, demonstrating a high order of complexity. This movement is based on the Newtonian constant of gravitation which is 6.673 84 x 10-11 m3 kg-1 s-2 seen everywhere in the universe as the exact measure of attraction that objects have between each other. There are hundreds of specific universal constants like the universal gravitation constant that operate here on Earth and universally on all the heavenly bodies. These unchanging constants have been repeatedly observed. They are highly reliable and can easily be found in any Physics textbook. This is a mark that demonstrates the physical reality that the universe is intricately designed like a fine-tuned machine throughout the entire cosmos.
The dynamic universe with its extraordinarily-organized movement of celestial objects fascinated the great scientific genius Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1786). In his scholarly work, the Principia (1687), Newton gives us the fundamental underpinnings of applied mathematics and physics by establishing laws of motion, universal gravitation, and classical mechanics. Shortly after this work, he made great contributions in the field of optics. This great giant of science, when observing the universe, did not succumb to the belief that the universe came into existence serendipitously, but believed instead that it had to come from the mind of the Master Designer, the Creator of the Universe. At the end of his magnificent work Principia, Newton clearly states who deserves the glory.
This most elegant system of the sun, comets and planets could not have arisen without the design and dominion of an intelligent and powerful being. And the fixed stars are the centres of similar systems, they will be constructed according to a similar design and subject to dominion of One… He is eternal and infinite, omnipotent and omniscient, that is, he endures from eternity to eternity, and he is present from infinity to infinity; he rules all things, and he knows all things that happen or can happen. (Principia Newton: Philosophical Writings edited by Andrew Janiak Cambridge University Press, 2014, p 111)
Newton submitted himself to the infinite Creator and honored Him as such. He did not believe the story that the universe created itself, but he intellectually understood that the universe was the result of a benevolent God who left his signature in the heavens for all to see. Contrary to the secular press, Newton had a passion to study God’s Word. He went to Cambridge at Christchurch College not just to study science, but to study theology, and this was evidenced in his work. He had a strong faith and trust in Christ. As a fervent Christian, his faith led him to the logical conclusion that there was a first cause for everything. It would be totally illogical to accept any other explanation. Jesus Christ, who is the center of all wisdom and law, created the universe by His own Word as it written in John 1:1-3.
1In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was in the beginning with God. 3All things were made through Him and without Him nothing was made that was made.
The question at hand is: what is real and what is a fairytale? Observations of galaxies moving apart made as early as 1929 by Edwin Hubble led to the prediction that the universe was expanding. This expanding universe gave rise to the idea that, if we were to reverse time, everything that is seen today, including energy, would shrink back into a cosmic egg. This of course is pure speculation, because fairy dust has never been observed. What we actually see is a universe moving quickly in every direction at high speeds. Using Newton’s model, there was a first cause which gave motion to all the bodies in the very beginning of creation. We would have to conclude that such tremendous force and energy needed to move all the bodies away would demand the force of an all-powerful Creator.
The Scripture describes such an event when the first force spread the universe apart like spreading a blanket, “Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them out like a tent to dwell in?” (Isaiah 40:22) Such a separation had to have its origins in Christ who manifests His glory throughout the universe.
Frog Prince Story
In the same way that evolutionists explain the beginning of the Cosmos, evolutionists must begin with the same expression we heard as children at story time when they explain how life came to be: “Once upon a time, about 3 billion years ago, life suddenly appeared on the Earth.” They are not sure how it got here, but now they think it was a microbe. Most secular scientists claim that life did not come from the Earth, but from outer space. They do not know how it arrived here, but they think it might have ended up in the ocean or some other body of water. Wherever it landed, the microbe found a home and it multiplied over and over again until an unbelievable event occurred. The bacteria changed and became a more complicated creature. The story does not end here, because it allegedly kept changing over millions of years until it became a fish. The fairy-tale goes on and on with upward changes, from the simple to the ever-more complex until finally apes became men.
It may be hard to believe, but this is the current story describing how the evolutionary process took place in the very beginning of time. The struggle to answer the question of how inert matter can become living things has been a total failure for two reasons. First, we have advanced in technological instrumentation and developed the electron microscope with the capability of seeing two million times what you can see with the naked eye. What we observe is more and more complexity functioning together in such a highly organized system, making it impossible to assume that life was assembled by any natural mechanism. Since biological evolution cannot take place on Earth, there is now false hope that the Earth can be seeded with life from outer space.
The second great obstacle to a creation without a Creator deals with the transfer of information in living systems. The discovery of DNA uncovered one the most complex information systems ever known to man. The information is ingeniously stored in an extremely tiny space, tightly wrapped on thin strands of DNA. Such a design has the capacity to contain enormous amounts of data, as exemplified by the fact that an amount of DNA measuring 1/15 the weight of a postage stamp can store enough information to produce 5 billion people. The DNA molecule has an enormous amount of biological information designed to keep the organism alive and enable it to reproduce. The intelligent information of the DNA code that is required for life has no known origins. The only explanation can be that it came from the bearer of all life, as it states in Genesis 1:20, “So God created great sea creatures and every living thing that moves, with which the waters abounded, according to their kind, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.”
It is interesting to note that, over the years, scientists have been working with generations of different kinds of organisms like certain types of bacteria and fruit flies. They subject them to certain tests and ascertain the changes that those tests generate. Although there are observable differences in certain traits, the organisms kept their basic integrity. In other words, at the end of the experiment, they are still the fruit flies or bacteria that they were when they started. The mechanism for grand changes is not understood, and has never been demonstrated by evolutionists. It is conveniently dismissed as slow change that we cannot observe in the present, because it takes place too slowly over millions of years of time. How convenient it is to use time as the magic wand in this frog-to-prince fairytale.
One of the primary figures in developing evolutionary theory was Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, a French invertebrate zoologist who used the same magic wand. He was so amazed at the diversity of insects, marine crustaceans and many other animals without backbones that he questioned how God could have created these creatures in a mere 6,000 years. He was a generation before Darwin and believed in the fairytale of evolution. His solution was to transfer God’s power into the concept of time in millions of years. In 1809, he stated in Philosophie zoologique,
Oh how very ancient the Earth is! And how ridiculously small the ideas of those who consider the Earth to be 6,000 years old. Time is unimportant and never difficult for nature. It is always at her disposal and represents an unlimited power in which she accomplishes her greatest and smallest tasks. This antiquity will appear even greater when he realizes the length of time and the particular conditions which were necessary to bring all living species into existence.
The story of evolution is told to everyone in our public schools. We are required to listen, learn, and not alter the story in any way, because it must stay intact and unchallenged. But one must sincerely wonder why they continue to tell us the same fairytale over and over again, teaching it as an undeniable scientific fact. It is very confusing and difficult to understand why they tell us it is true and real when their world of evolution is really a fantasyland. Why not believe in logic that insists there had to be a Creator, the first cause. Instead of the fairytale, why not have faith that points to an all-powerful and infinite Creator in the person of Jesus Christ, who is also our Savior?
